The Jesuit Social Center Tokyo Migrants’ Desk, is the fruit of long years of direct service of individual Jesuits in Japan to the disadvantaged sectors in Japanese society. Programs initially to help vulnerable people and to assist refugees eventually developed into programs for migrants. Japan had become a more attractive destination for foreign workers yet had very weak systems to protect their rights.
The Migrants’ Desk through its network of lawyers thus provides legal assistance to migrants who have mishaps with Japanese law, including immigration concerns.
The Migrants’ Desk also conducts visits to detention centers to monitor the welfare of migrants and provide legal advice, if needed.
The Desk likewise organizes seminars for migrants that facilitate their integration into Japanese society.
